Oral Cancer - Statistics and Prevention

The risks, signs, and symptoms of Oral Cancer

Mocksville, NC - Oral Cancer is part of a group of cancers commonly referred to as Head and Neck Cancer. It makes up roughly 85% of that category. This group does not include brain cancer, which has a category all on its own. The most common type of Oral Cancer is squamous cell carcinoma.

There are over 9,000 deaths per year from Oral Cancer. Patients who survive a first encounter with Oral Cancer have up to a 20 times higher risk of developing a second cancer. This increased factor can last from five to ten years.

Historically, the age at time of Oral Cancer diagnosis tends to be in patients over 40, but research now shows an increased number of younger men and women being diagnosed, due to HPV16. Smokeless chewing and spitting tobacco has also been linked to younger men and women being diagnosed with Oral Cancer. Smokeless tobacco may reduce risk of lung cancer, but it has a negative effect on diagnosis rates of Oral Cancer, and also periodontal disease.

Risk Factors for Oral Cancer include: Alcohol and tobacco use, Genetics, HPV, Age (over 40).
